Project I, Utility Shelves, Assessing Current Capabilities and Skills, ImPerfect Woodshop at SmAssmblyRqrd Just set up my limited space workshop, now need to assess current capabilities and skills for the tools and shop space I have. What I really need is to extent my 8 foot kitchen counter by two feet. I have not done that before. So devised a training program, I’ll first build a basement shelving unit using similar principles of a kitchen counter. I accept that it may be an ugly mess, but it will be out of site yet still be functional. What I learned: glue wedges in corners are great to stiffen joints, need to be constantly vigilant thinking through how to make all parts straight and square, need to think in 3 dimensions of total project, need better way to support shelves (drawers), need cross braces and need better joint for them. Don’t be discouraged by Project I results, it is a training exercise. Decided I need another training project. See Project II, desk with drawer units and shelves for hobby room.. It will be visible to visitors, so the pressure is on to apply lesson learned. Am I capable of building a kitchen counter that won’t be an eye sore?
